Car Trouble

July 30, 2002 - 1:46am

If you've never stood at the side of 316 at 10:00 at night and tried to get an unstartable car to start, boy howdy are you missing out.

Jessica called me because she ran out of gas (or that's what we thought at the time) and me and Dad headed out to bring her some.

Only first, the Volvo overheated to such astronomical proportions that I coasted down the atlanta highway and then made an illegal turn into a gas station to get a drink for my car. Poor Bruno (name of the Volvo). We almost broke him.

The irony.

A semi passing you every 4 minutes at 70 miles an hour makes your life flash before your eyes.

But it was also kind of fun. Sam and me and Jess stood around while Dad tried to make to car start. We talked a lot about how guys either know a lot about cars or pretend to know about cars, and how if you have your hood up somewhere they will gravitate towards it and want to “help”.

Dad is seriously like Disaster-Man though. He had all kinds of flashing hazard things he pulled out of the trunk... reflecting things and things you put on top of the car... the jumper cables are in mom's car though, for some strange reason.

The best part was when the cop showed up and said, “Well, I'm no mechanic, but I'll take a look.” and proceeded to get behind the wheel and do exactly what we had been doing for the last hour—turning the key and putting it into gear. Dad later confessed to us that while the two of them had been standing under the hood the cop had said, “I really don't know anything about this car.”

“Me neither.” Dad agreed.

Jessica eventually got in touch with her parents and they came and hooked up this AMAZING impromtu tow to the back of their truck. Dad signaled (::cough,cough,distracted,cough::) cars with the huge honking flashlight he brought with him until I took it away. And soon everyone was on thier way.

Awwww.....

You know, it's sitches like this one that they make commercials about. It really brings people together and shows them how tight they are.

The idea about cars w/ the hood up and guys has been tested and it works. Thanks to all of those people who were involved.
