Speak of the Devil...

July 30, 2002 - 5:15am

So when taking Jessica home this morning, we saw a deer, like 30 feet up ahead with plenty of time to stop.

She starts talking about how they play a game in her family about pointing out deer, and then she says, “But the deer that you hit is the one you don't see. The one that jumps right out in front of you.”

So of course, on my way back, what jumps right into my path but a deer. Good thing I was going really slow and keeping a close watch. I slammed on the brakes and it trotted on across the road.

2½ feet away from something semi-serious happening, ya'll. My life is endlessly exciting.

I usually feel better when I don't hit the deer, too... And I think that goes for the dear deer, dear me... deer me!! Deer Me...at!! One time, I was taking a Ranger (army) back to ranger camp in the dead of night in the 56 Buick station wagon. I was driving. The deer was huge and stood still suddenly right in the middle of the road. I slammed down on the brakes on that dirt road in Florida as hard as I could... the tires stopped spinning but the car kept sliding, right *smack* *crunch* into the deer. That rager got out and put the deer on top on the station wagon. He was doing survival training and had snuck out to see a girlfriend in town and caught a ride back to the wilderness with us. God know only why we were driving that way. He tied the deer down and we drove him to camp. He was going to tell his recruits that he killed it with his survival knife. He was not allowed to say that he had hitched a ride from big Fort Walton out to the Choctawhatchee National Forest. That would not look good to the commandant. I'll bet they felt like they were eating so well after all those palmetto roots. Drive slow during deer season. It could save your life. They don't build cars like that fifty-six buick anymore -- it wasn't even dented. Deers wreck the cars today. Somehow, after almost a hundred years of evolution, they still can't stay out of your headlights.
