Everybody Must Get Stoned

October 2, 2002 - 9:38pm

So today we are discussing Bob Dylan's Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (from Blonde on Blonde), which, in case you don't know, goes something like "Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good, / They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would. / They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home. / Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone. / But I would not feel so all alone, / Everybody must get stoned."

Someone asks what the 12 and 35 mean, and our prof says something like Dylan has always been very ambiguous about the title and no one really knows. Then one of the TA's chimes in, "Well you know what 12 multiplied by 35 is don't you?

"420."

Some chuckles from the crowd, but then the prof goes, "What does that mean?"

"Nevermind we'll talk about it later."

"It's sexual isn't it. I'm just missing it."

Students answer in unison "No." and begin laughing. He walks over to the TA and leans down so he can whisper it.

He takes the mic off, but we still can all hear perfectly when he exclaims,

"What? But I smoke pot all the time."

HAHAHAHAHHaHaHaHahahahahahahahaha

"There are no hours in which to smoke pot. Is that like tea time?"

***

Later, I go to the library to do my listening assignment, and I'm approaching the counter, and the guy says, "Can I help you?"

"Yeah, I need to third CD for—"

"—History of Rock & Roll."

"Yeah...how did you know?"

"You just look like a Rock & Roller." he replied matter-of-factly.

Now, the real reason he guessed could be that I was probably the 10th kid to come in that day asking for that CD. But the sincerity and authority with which he made that statement actually made me think that maybe I do look like a Rock & Roller.

Rock.

I go to turn the CD back in, and he asks me, "Did you finish rocking out?"

"Yeah."

"Did you rock all the way out and come back?"

I smile. "Yeah, I think so."

"Excellent."

I wish everyone could be so positive.

I know I'm working on it.

Incase you ever talk to him, tell him that I think 420 is actually a new concept. My two parents (graduated '69 & '76) had never heard of the reference, and replied bascially the same, "Is it like tea time?" That is TOO funny. I'll definently have to look into taking that class if i ever get there...*fingers crossed* Love Ya~Jess

HeLLo. THis is Dr. Milton here to tell everyone about "420". Known Myths 1. Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420. The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands. 2. There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana. Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used. 3. April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day. Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin. 4. April 20th is Hitler's birthday. Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it. 5. The date of the Columbine school shootings. This happened after the term was already in use. 6. 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland. Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea. The Origin Revealed According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers. A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option. Simply put, 420 is a symbol of cannabis and its culture. Today, April 20th events are international, and 4:20 pm has become sort of a world wide "burn time". Thank You. That is all.

I dont really know how I stumbled upon this page, but this is all very funny and great. 4/20 is a wonderful day, and I feel better now knowing that it has nothing to do with Hitler's bday because I definitely thought about that well getting rediculously stoned on 4/20. So thanks for all the wonderful useful information, and I'ma go smoke now! Peace*
