So, I am so totally a Von Bondies convert.

Last night I went with Melissa and Emily to the 40 Watt and saw the Shut-ups, the Outfit, and the Von Bondies.

Yes, the same Von Bondies who's lead singer got beat up by Jack White.

For $6!!!

When they came out they had that too-cool-for-school vibe, every article of clothing seeming very deliberate, cultivated instead of organically grown. They seemed very serious, like rocking is very serious business.

After they warmed up the very tough crowd, however, they rocked. so. hard.

Highlights include: very sparse drum kit (bass, one tom, one snare, one symbol), girls that can actually play their instruments really well, (too often people get caught up the the novelty of just having a girl in a real rock band), and a lead singer with a really electrifying stage presence.

They are going to be on Last Call on Thursday. I don't have cable but you should all check them out.

Plus their website is bright pink. Gotta love that.

The whole show got me thinking on how with rock n roll, even if you want everything to be based on the merits of the songwriting and the mastery of the instruments, so much of rock music is really about style. Sex appeal, culture of "cool", are what really makes me, and I suspect at least many other young people, to really get into one band over another.

So much of rock music is inherantly tied up in the confidence and swagger of the performer.

Or that's just what I think. Today, anyway.

In completely unrelated news, amazon lets you rank things on your wishlist now, which will be helpful to anyone who is ever trying to sort through the 25+ pages of merchandise I have on mine.

The door guy at the 40 Watt was so close to giving me a 21+ stamp. He then commiserated with me on my 4 remaining days.

Which is now just 3.
