Some Thoughts On My Bodyclock

October 15, 2002 - 3:52am

My sleeping and waking life is a Catch-22 of sorts.

If I don't get enough sleep one night, it is all I can do to pull myself out of bed and get to class. The whole day I can't concentrate and it's pretty much a waste. Sometimes, after a day like this, I fall right into bed, sometimes, insomnia still results.

Conversely, if I get plenty of sleep, I have a really productive, good, happy day, and then cannot get to sleep that night.

The only time I didn't have trouble falling asleep recently was when I was coding over the summer and would just have 18 hour days followed by 10 hours of sleep and another 18 hour day.

Obviously, there is not enough room for this schedule in one day.

10 + 18 = 28

28 > 24

{For anyone who has trouble with the math.}

So I would just turn my schedule over and over again until days were at night and nights were in day and then back again. It was ideal.

What is a woman to do when no internal schedule is inherent to her, when sun and moon have no effect and she has to bend herself to the schedule of the world?

(if one more person tells me it's a matter of habit I'll have to repeat this whole diatribe for you next time we meet and you don't want that, because it will be much more passionate in person)

Sleepy rambling. Hopefully, I can go to sleep now.

4 AM... and still wide awake

October 7, 2002 - 4:05am

I've been doing the backwards math for longer than I can remember. All my life, it seems.

"If I fall asleep now, I'll get 5 good hours."

I've been awake for two hours now, lying in bed, curled up and warm under my covers, and everytime I start to relax, my mind starts racing.

I think about how the club has been open for almost exactly a year now and all it has done is virtually put my family in the poor house. I think about how you can work very hard with all your heart and still get nothing in the end. I think about being able to pay for my education, being able to get a job years from now. I think about what will happen to me if I don't get into the art school here.

Sometimes I think in terms of PHP, and my brain fires off a series of "echo"s and "$"s and semicolons. I think about querying databases and writing to text files and trying (though usually not succeeding) at getting my head around the big picture. Trying to remember how it all fits together. WAHOO!

I MADE A PERFECT SCORE ON MY STATISTICS TEST!

I haven't done this well since high school.

(And never this well in math.)

Forwards & Other Things I Dislike

August 27, 2002 - 11:44pm

In my e-mail, I've just recieved what (to me) is a very transparent trick.

This is strange...can you figure it out?

Are you the 2% or 98% of the population?

Follow the instructions! NO PEEKING AHEAD!

* Do the following exercise, guaranteed to raise an eyebrow.

* There's no trick or surprise.

Haha. Lie #1.

* Just follow these instructions, and answer the questions one at a time and as quickly as you can!

* Again, as quickly as you can but don't advance until you've done each of them ... really.

* Now, scroll down (but not too fast, you might miss something).

I get it. This a followed by a lot of memory hogging blank space.

Think of a number from 1 to 10

7.

Multiply that number by 9

And then we are going to add the digits together and get nine, right? Don't forget what they taught youwhen you were first learning your multiplication tables...Any number 1-10, when multiplied by nine, will have two digits that add up to nine.

7 x 9 = 63.

6 + 3 = 9.

Magic!

If the number is a 2-digit number, add the digits together.

Done.

Now subtract 5

You should all have 4 now.

Determine which letter in the alphabet corresponds to the number you ended up with (example: 1=a, 2=b, 3=c,etc.)

Think of a country that starts with that letter

Remember the last letter of the name of that country

Think of the name of an animal that starts with that letter

Remember the last letter in the name of that animal

Think of the name of a fruit that starts with that letter

Are you thinking of a Kangaroo in Denmark eating an Orange?

No. I have a Cat in the Dominican Republic eating a Tangerine.

I told you this was FREAKY!! If not, you're among the 2% of the population whose minds are different enough to think of something else. 98% of people will answer with kangaroos in Denmark when given this exercise.

Freaky, huh? Keep this message going. This one is actually worth sending on to others. Forward it to people you know so they can find out if they are usual or unusual.

Great. Cause I didn't know I was unusual.

Nope.
